Gloria Fletcher is the new president and publisher of the Tulsa World.
Fletcher was also named a vice president of BH Media Group, the newspaper’s parent company. She will oversee BH Media newspapers in Oklahoma, Texas and Alabama.
A native Oklahoman, Fletcher had been president of Black Press Inc.’s Sound Publishing Inc. in Everett, Washington.
BH Media Group Chairman and CEO Terry Kroeger said the company had been trying to recruit Fletcher for some time.
“We have tried to hire Gloria into our company in the past, but never could quite get that done,” Kroeger told employees, according to a story credited to staff in the Tulsa World. “The lure of returning to her home state made this an exceptional fit and allowed us to be successful in hiring her this time.”
Fletcher replaces Tulsa World President and Publisher Bill Masterson Jr., who announced his retirement in April. Masterson was named to the position in 2013, shortly after BH Media Group purchased the Tulsa World from the Robert E. Lorton family.
Fletcher began her newspaper career 33 years ago at her hometown newspaper, the Woodward (Oklahoma) News. She later became publisher of the Enid News and Eagle. Fletcher served in management positions at CNHI and GateHouse Media before joining Sound Publishing in 2012.
The Tulsa World article noted that Fletcher is the second woman to hold the title of publisher at the paper. Maud Lorton succeeded her husband, Eugene Lorton, as publisher in 1949 and held the position for 10 years.
