Rick Welch, publisher of The Messenger in Madisonville, Kentucky, has been named group publisher of Paxton Media Group’s Northwest Kentucky Newspaper Group.
The group includes The Messenger, the newly acquired Providence Journal-Enterprise and Dawson Springs Progress, and the Grayson County News-Gazette.
Welch’s newspaper career began as a sports writer, columnist and account executive for the Post-Tribune in Gary, Indiana. From there he became regional advertising director of the Herald News Group in Merrillville, Indiana. Next he became advertising manager of Nixon Newspapers’ Wabash (Indiana) Plain Dealer and then advertising manager of the Evansville (Indiana) Courier & Press.
He began his career with Paxton Media Group as publisher of the Frankfort (Indiana) Times in 2001. He was then named publisher of the Michigan City (Indiana) News-Dispatch and New Buffalo Times in Michigan in 2005. In 2016, Welch was named group publisher of PMG’s Princeton Indiana Group of newspapers, and the following year became group publisher of Paxton’s Southern Kentucky Newspaper Group, which consists of the Russellville News Leader & Democrat, the Franklin Favorite, and the Portland Leader and the Macon County Times in Tennessee.
That group will be taken over by Brandon Cox, who has been named publisher of the Kentucky New Era in Hopkinsville, which Paxton acquired last November.
