Todd A. Nelson, president of the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and Sandy Thompson, the WEHCO Media daily’s finance director, announced their retirements.
Nelson said his retirement would be effective April 1 while Thompson said her departure would depend on finding and training a replacement.
“I graduated on a Saturday and went to work for a newspaper on Monday. That is the essence of my story,” Nelson told the newspaper’s staff, according to a story by Doug Thompson. at a meeting Monday.
Nelson joined the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in 2014 after a 23-year career with Lee Enterprises, most recently as regional publisher for its central Illinois newspapers.
“Todd has served our industry at a high level, including five years as the president of the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette,” Mark Lane, president of WEHCO Media’s newspaper division, said. “Under his leadership, the NWADG has had many successes and accomplishments. I wish Todd great happiness and health in his retirement.”
Thompson first became chief finance director at what was then the Northwest Arkansas Times in 1983. She stayed with the paper through a series of owners.
“We work for a company that understands the importance of producing a quality newspaper,” she told the newspaper. “It has been my honor to work for them and with the employees who produce a new product every day.”
Replacements for Nelson and Thompson have not yet been announced.
