Nutting family-owned The Ogden Newspapers is buying the publishing assets of the Arundel family’s The Virginia News Group LLC, including its flagship Loudoun Times-Mirror and Loudner magazine.

The sale was announced by Ogden family owner and Regional Publisher Cameron Nutting Williams. Terms were not disclosed.

“We could not be happier to be the new publisher of the Times-Mirror,” Williams said in an article in the newly acquired newspaper. “While the newspaper industry continues to be systemically challenged, we believe that there is a future for the Times-Mirror as the dominant local newspaper serving Loudoun County readers and advertisers.”

In print and online, the Times-Mirror serves more than 50,000 readers. The newspaper will continue to employ its local staff at its Leesburg location, including Peter Arundel, its publisher and former owner.

Peter Arundel’s father, Arthur “Nick” Arundel, purchased the newspaper in 1963. Peter Arundel purchased the Times-Mirror from his family in 2015 after the death of his father.

“We’re thrilled to join a company that understands the lasting impact of newspapers today,” Peter Arundel said in the announcement of the transaction. “The Times-Mirror is in good hands, and we now have the resources to build the future of print and digital media right here in Loudoun.”

“Ogden is very committed to local media in the region,” he added. “Their recent purchases of neighboring legacy newspapers—The Winchester Star and Frederick (Maryland) News Post—makes the Times-Mirror a strategic fit for advertisers seeking to expand their reach.”

In addition to the Winchester and Frederick newspapers, Ogden has a substantial presence in the region, owning The Journal in Martinsburg, West Virginia; the Northern Virginia Daily of Strasburg, and the recently acquired former Byrd newspapers in Winchester, Harrisonburg, Front Royal, Woodstock and Luray.

After the purchase, the Times-Mirror is now printed at Ogden’s state-of-the-art printing facility in Frederick.

Wheeling, West Virginia-based Ogden also publishes newspapers in Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Utah.

The company has been a recent aggressive acquirer of newspaper properties.

“We still believe very strongly in the power of printed newspapers and our family continues to be willing to invest in newspapers that provide a vital service to their readers and advertisers,” Ogden Newspapers CEO Bob Nutting told the Times-Mirror. “Loudoun County is a thriving area with important news and readers that deserve a dedicated local newspaper. We are happy to be able to play a part in ensuring the future of the Loudoun Times-Mirror.”
