The Legal Update: This conference favorite kicks off the conference and will include five sessions presented by Seyfarth attorneys that will run from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and feature all the latest legal developments you need to know about.
Presented by Camille Olson, Partner, Seyfarth Shaw LLP
The #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter movements have brought workplace culture into the spotlight as employers nationwide work to ensure that their policies, procedures, and work environments are free of harassment and discrimination. Employer representatives — from in-house counsel to outside counsel, HR professionals to CEOs — have been challenged to review their effectiveness in dealing with and preventing workplace discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. For many employers, striving simply to satisfy basic legal requirements is a thing of the past. In this webinar, we will focus on best practices in hiring, policies, training, investigations, and discipline in order to deal effectively with these issues.
In this presentation, Seyfarth will cover recent organizing campaigns at newspapers in 2018 and 2019, with a particular focus on the differences between organizing digital platforms and traditional print media, which have both seen significant increases in organizing efforts in recent years. The presentation will cover current union efforts to partner with newspaper management, for example to prevent downsizing, as well as recent union strike votes. Finally, Kaitlyn Whiteside will give an update from the trenches on her on-going first contract negotiations with the NewsGuild, which began in May 2018.

Today’s in-house and HR teams face a daunting list of tasks and matters on a daily basis. All the while, we always hear the old, clichéd edict: do more with less. Luckily, as the legal and compliance spheres have begun to look to the business side of the house, there are glimmers of tools and approaches that can make the load more manageable. In this session, a pair of Seyfarth Shaw’s “business of law” professionals will present on some of those resources that any Inland member can begin to apply in a variety of ways, from rudimentary exercises to sophisticated programs. Their hope is to spur thinking about how to make your day-to-day easier.
